Where Defensive Identity, Pressure, and Discipline Converge
Brett Hickman has experienced football at almost every level; FBS, FCS, Division II, and high school football.
A former high school Head Coach, Hickman turned around a West Brunswick (NC) program with just three winning seasons in the prior twenty years. By year 2, he guided West Brunswick to a 10-2 record and followed it up by advancing to the State Quarterfinals in year 3.
Currently, the Defensive Coordinator at Anderson University (SC), Hickman helped the Trojans to a #19 Total Defense ranking in just the second year of the program.
This system, developed over the course of two decades, is defined by building tough, disciplined units and driving rapid program turnarounds at every level.
ADVANTAGES OF THE BLACKOUT DEFENSIVE SYSTEM

Installs Fast
The Blackout system is built with simple rules and clear progressions that allow staff to install quickly. Players spend less time thinking and more time playing fast.
Adapts to Personnel
The system flexes to your roster, not the other way around. Whether you’re big, fast, young, or thin on depth, The Blackout gives you answers without reinventing your defense.

Creates Identity
The Blackout establishes a clear, aggressive defensive identity rooted in pressure and discipline. Opponents know exactly what they’re facing — and still struggle to stop it.
Built for Modern Football
Designed to handle spread, tempo, and RPO-heavy attacks, the system blends odd-front structure with modern coverage solutions. It gives coaches confidence against today’s offenses without overcomplication.
